Marijuana, derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, is utilized as a therapeutic agent to alleviate symptoms associated with specific medical conditions. It is commonly referred to as medical cannabis.The Cannabis sativa plant comprises active compounds that exert physiological effects within the body, potentially mitigating certain symptoms. The most prominent of these compounds are delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, primarily affects the brain, influencing mood, behavior, and cognitive processes.
Medical marijuana comes from the Cannabis sativa plant. It’s used to ease symptoms caused by certain medical conditions. Medical marijuana also is called medical cannabis.
he State of Florida currently permits two types of medical cannabis (medical marijuana) treatments for qualified patients:
* Low-THC Medical Cannabis (also known as Cannabidiol or CBD)
* THC-Containing Medical Cannabis
Low-THC Medical Cannabis (CBD)
The active ingredient of low-THC medical cannabis is cannabidiol (CBD). This treatment does not produce the euphoric effects typically associated with cannabis consumption. CBD appears to be non-toxic to humans, although some mild side effects have been reported, including increased sleepiness, fatigue, diarrhea, and alterations in appetite.
THC-Containing Medical Cannabis
THC is the compound responsible for the euphoric/psychoactive effects of cannabis. The dosage required to provide relief for the patient will vary, and so will the intensity of the euphoric effect. CBD should also be an ingredient of this treatment, as it synergistically interacts with THC and can mitigate the euphoric effects of the THC. This allows for higher doses of THC to be administered while reducing the associated side effects.
••**Step 2: If eligible, the physician will enroll you in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR).**
••**Step 3: Access the MMUR and submit an application for an identification card. Alternatively, print an application form and mail it to the registry. To obtain an ID card, you must provide a copy of your Florida driver’s license or Florida identification card, or other proof of residency. If you are applying solely for yourself, you may use your driver’s license photograph from the state. Otherwise, you must submit a full-face, 2”x2” passport-type color photograph taken within the 90 days prior to the application.
To be eligible for a medical cannabis card, patients must be Florida residents and have at least one of the following medical conditions, as determined by the state, that qualify them for medical cannabis or a cannabis delivery device.
